LAGOS – A non-governmental organization dedicated to caring for widows and protecting their interest has appeal for support to build a house for widows in the country.
Olori Ayo Yemisi Jaiyeola, the founder and executive director of Serendipity House Widows’ Foundation, disclosed the plan in an interview with Daily Independent in at the weekend.
She said that the Widows’ House would house widows who do not have a place to stay, adding that women who have lost their husbands and are seeking to escape from violent situations would be offered shelter at the house.
She stated that her organization has secured a piece of land where it wants to build the house for widows and called for support to make the project a reality.
According to her, “Widows in Nigeria are made to cry daily; some of them lose their homes after their husband’s demise and some have to fight for their husband’s property. In some churches and places, they are treated as burdens. Some women are even threatened when they see widows around. They are afraid the widows may take their husbands away. Widows are vulnerable and some people take advantage of them.”
She called on governments, corporate bodies, organizations and people of goodwill to support the organization’s plan to build a shelter for widows in the country.
Jaiyeola, who is the charter president of the Maryland Lions Club, called on politicians to support the cause, which she described as a worthy one.
