What had begun with hope gradually became surrounded by obstacles.

The unfinished work stood before Zerubbabel like a great mountain.

However, God sent a word of encouragement through the prophet Zechariah:

“Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” — Zechariah 4:6

God further declared:

“Who art thou, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain.” — Zechariah 4:7

This remains a powerful message for everyone facing difficulties today.

Some mountains cannot be moved by physical strength, money, influence, position or human connections. They require prayer, obedience, faith, perseverance and complete reliance upon the Holy Spirit.

The mountain may be great, but it is not greater than God.

The opposition may be strong, but it is not stronger than the Spirit of God.

The resources may appear limited, but the God who gives a vision is also able to provide everything required for its fulfilment.

WHAT IS THE MOUNTAIN BEFORE YOU?

A mountain may be anything standing between a person and the fulfilment of God’s purpose.

For some, the mountain is bereavement.

For others, it may be sickness, financial hardship, unemployment, rejection, loneliness, family conflict, delayed expectations or the responsibility of raising children without adequate support.

For widows, the mountains may include grief, hunger, poverty, abandonment, property deprivation, harmful traditional practices, family hostility, social exclusion and the fear of facing the future alone.

For humanitarian organisations, the mountains may include inadequate funding, insufficient facilities, increasing numbers of vulnerable families and limited resources with which to respond to their needs.

Whatever the mountain may be, God’s message remains:

“Before Zerubbabel, you shall become a plain.”

THE JOSHUA EXPERIENCE: RISING AFTER THE DEATH OF MOSES

Joshua 1:1–10 begins at a deeply painful moment.

Moses, the servant of God and the great leader of Israel, had died. His death created grief, uncertainty and an enormous leadership vacuum.

Joshua had served beside Moses for many years, but he now had to face a future in which Moses would no longer be physically present.

God did not ignore the reality of the loss. He said plainly:

“Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan.” — Joshua 1:2

God acknowledged the death, but He did not allow the journey of Israel to end with the death of Moses.

Moses had died, but God’s covenant had not died.

Moses had died, but the promised land had not disappeared.

Moses had died, but Joshua’s calling and responsibility were still alive.

The death of Moses marked the end of an important chapter, but it did not mark the end of God’s purpose for Joshua or for the children of Israel.

There was still a Jordan to cross.

There was still a people to lead.

There was still a promised land to possess.

There was still an assignment to complete.

MY PERSONAL JOSHUA EXPERIENCE

This passage became deeply personal to me after the death of my husband, Omo-Oba Venerable Dr Babatunde Oluyemisi Abisoye Jaiyeola, in 2008.

His death brought me into my own season of grief, uncertainty and painful transition. I had lost my husband, companion and an important source of strength in my life.

Yet, at that time, hundreds of widows were already connected to the work of Serendipity House Widows Foundation. They looked towards the Foundation for spiritual encouragement, food support, counselling, friendship, direction and leadership.

In the middle of my own bereavement, I felt God speaking to me through His words to Joshua:

“Now therefore arise.”

The message was not that I should forget my husband.

It was not an instruction to pretend that his death had not affected me.

It was not a command to suppress my tears or deny the reality of my grief.

It was a call to recognise that, although my husband had died, the assignment of God upon my life had not died.

Eighteen years ago, I had to make a decision: would I remain permanently overwhelmed by my loss, or would I arise, trust God and continue leading the hundreds of widows who also needed courage to rebuild their lives?

By the grace of God, I chose to arise.

I chose to cross the Jordan of personal grief and continue the widowcare journey.

I chose to turn my pain into ministry, my experience into compassion and my bereavement into a deeper understanding of the lives of the women I had been called to serve.

My widowhood gave new depth to the mission. I was no longer ministering to widows only as a humanitarian, counsellor or advocate. I was now standing among them as a widow who understood the loneliness, uncertainty, emotional pain and responsibilities that can follow the death of a husband.

My testimony is this:

“When my husband died eighteen years ago, I was grieving, but hundreds of widows were also looking towards me for leadership and encouragement. Through Joshua 1:1–10, I understood that I had to arise, cross my Jordan and continue leading them forward. I did not move forward because I had forgotten my husband; I moved forward because the assignment of God upon my life was still alive.”

A MESSAGE TO WIDOWS: NOW, THEREFORE, ARISE

For a widow, the death of a husband can feel like the death of an entire world.

It may affect her emotional security, financial stability, family relationships, social position and plans for the future.

She may suddenly be required to make decisions alone, raise children alone, manage responsibilities alone and confront situations she never expected to face without her husband.

The grief is real and should never be dismissed.

However, God’s message to Joshua carries hope for every widow:

“Now therefore arise.”

To arise does not mean that a widow has forgotten her husband.

To move forward does not mean that the marriage was unimportant.

To rebuild does not mean that she has denied her pain.

To smile again does not mean that she never loved deeply.

Moving forward means accepting that, although death has changed her life, it does not have the authority to destroy her remaining purpose.

A widow may carry loving memories of her husband and still move into the future God has prepared for her.

She may grieve and still grow.

She may remember and still rebuild.

She may cry and still continue.

She may have lost her husband, but she has not lost God.

CROSSING THE JORDAN OF WIDOWHOOD

The Jordan represented transition.

Joshua could not remain permanently on the side associated with mourning, fear and uncertainty. There was another territory to enter and another assignment to fulfil.

Every widow will eventually face her own Jordan.

Her Jordan may be learning to manage the family finances.

It may be returning to work, starting a business or acquiring a new skill.

It may be raising children without the physical presence of their father.

It may be confronting harmful relatives, protecting family property or seeking legal assistance.

It may be accepting counselling, joining a supportive fellowship or learning to live meaningfully again.

Crossing the Jordan may feel frightening, but God does not ask His children to cross alone.

He told Joshua:

“As I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” — Joshua 1:5

This is God’s assurance to every widow:

You have not been abandoned.

People may withdraw. Friends may disappoint. Some relatives may fail to provide support. Nevertheless, God remains the widow’s defender, provider, companion and source of strength.

BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS

God repeatedly told Joshua to be strong and courageous:

“Be strong and of a good courage.” — Joshua 1:6

“Only be thou strong and very courageous.” — Joshua 1:7

“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed.” — Joshua 1:9

The repetition shows that courage is not always automatic.

Even people of faith sometimes feel afraid, lonely, confused or uncertain.

Joshua had witnessed miracles and served beside Moses, yet he still needed God’s encouragement. A widow should therefore not condemn herself because she sometimes feels frightened or overwhelmed.

Courage does not mean the absence of pain or fear. Courage means deciding to obey God and continue living while the heart is still healing.

Widows need more than occasional sympathy. They need friendship, spiritual support, food security, counselling, healthcare, economic opportunities, legal protection and compassionate communities that will help them rebuild their lives.

THE WORD OF GOD AS OUR COMPASS

God instructed Joshua not to allow the Book of the Law to depart from his mouth. He was to meditate upon it day and night and carefully obey it.

This teaches us that courage must be guided by the Word of God.

A widow rebuilding her life needs prayer, but she also needs wisdom.

She needs faith, but she must also make responsible decisions.

She needs spiritual encouragement, but she may also require medical, financial, legal and professional assistance.

The Word of God becomes a compass that helps her distinguish between faith and desperation, godly counsel and manipulation, and genuine opportunities and dangerous promises.

God’s Word reminds the widow that she remains valuable, loved and purposeful.

THE HANDS THAT STARTED SHALL FINISH

God also assured Zerubbabel:

“The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it.” — Zechariah 4:9

This is encouragement to every widow, family, ministry and organisation facing difficulty.

Do not abandon the vision because progress appears slow.

Do not surrender because people do not understand your calling.

Do not conclude that God has forgotten you because the required resources have not yet appeared.

Do not despise the days of small beginnings.

The same God who gave you the grace to begin can provide the strength, wisdom, helpers and resources required to finish.

THE SERENDIPITY HOUSE EXPERIENCE

The story of Serendipity House Widows Foundation is also a story of moving mountains and crossing Jordans.

Founded on 24 February 1995, the Foundation has provided more than 31 years of organised widowcare, spiritual encouragement, food support, counselling, advocacy, empowerment and humanitarian service.

With more than three decades of sustained service, Serendipity House Widows Foundation stands as one of the oldest dedicated widows foundations in Africa.

Over the years, the Foundation has ministered to and supported thousands of widows and their families. The work has survived seasons of inadequate funding, increasing humanitarian needs, limited facilities, personal losses and enormous responsibilities.

Yet the Foundation continues to believe that the mountains before widowcare can become plains.

The mountains of hunger, poverty, rejection, loneliness, injustice and social exclusion can be confronted through the Spirit of God working through compassionate people.

God can raise individuals, churches, organisations, families, governments and communities to stand with widows and protect their dignity.

The work will not be accomplished by human strength alone.

It will be accomplished by the Spirit of God working through willing hearts and helping hands.

WIDOWHOOD IS NOT THE END OF PURPOSE

Widowhood may mark the death of a husband, but it must not become the burial ground of a woman’s gifts, calling and future.

Like Joshua, she can arise.

Like Joshua, she can cross her Jordan.

Like Joshua, she can receive courage from God.

Like Zerubbabel, she can confront the mountain.

Like Zerubbabel, she can believe that what God has placed in her hands can still be completed.

A widow can still raise responsible children.

She can still establish a business.

She can still study, teach, lead, preach, counsel, create and build.

She can still serve God and contribute meaningfully to society.

She can become a source of strength to other widows because the comfort she has received can become comfort for another person.

EVANGELISATION AND THE SALVATION OF SOULS

The humanitarian work of Serendipity House Widows Foundation is inseparable from the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Food, clothing, healthcare, counselling, shelter and empowerment are essential, but the greatest need of every human being is reconciliation with God.

Jesus Christ came to save the lost, heal broken hearts, forgive sins and give eternal life to everyone who believes in Him.

Humanitarian service must therefore reveal the heart of Christ.

Every meal provided should demonstrate His compassion.

Every widow comforted should experience His love.

Every family supported should be reminded that God has not forgotten them.

Every gathering should create an opportunity for people to hear the message of salvation.

The core passion of HRG Olori Dame Ayo Yemisi Jaiyeola is the evangelisation of souls—leading people to Jesus Christ while responding compassionately to their spiritual, physical, emotional and social needs.

Her conviction is that people must not only receive temporary relief; they must also have the opportunity to encounter the eternal hope and transforming love found in Jesus Christ.

ABOUT HRG OLORI DAME AYO YEMISI JAIYEOLA

HRG Olori Dame Ayo Yemisi Jaiyeola is a Christian humanitarian, family evangelist, widowcare advocate, counsellor, teacher, community leader, music and voice specialist, and Missioner of Serendipity House Widows Foundation.

Born and raised in a clergy family and later married into royalty, she developed an early commitment to Christian service, worship, music, evangelism and compassionate ministry.

She trained as a teacher at the former Methodist Teacher Training College, Shagamu, studied Music at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, and advanced to the University of Ife—now Obafemi Awolowo University—where her areas of specialisation included voice physiology, church musicianship, speech and drama.

She also received scriptural training through Serendipity House, Littleton, USA.

In 1995, she founded the humanitarian initiative that developed into Serendipity House Widows Foundation.

Following her personal experience of widowhood in 2008, she established God’s Wives International Widows Ministry, providing a spiritual fellowship and support platform through which widows are reminded that they remain loved, valuable and useful in the hands of God.

She also ministers through Berakah Widows Fellowship, offering prayer, biblical teaching, counselling, friendship and encouragement to women rebuilding their lives after bereavement.

She trains churches, ministries, non-governmental organisations and community groups in the principles and practical responsibilities of compassionate widowcare ministry.

Her life’s work brings together the evangelisation of souls, widowcare, hunger relief, Christian counselling, women’s empowerment, family restoration, community development and advocacy for the dignity and protection of widows.

Her guiding conviction is that no widow should be abandoned, no hungry family should be ignored and no opportunity to proclaim the saving love of Jesus Christ should be wasted.

DECLARATION

Every mountain before us shall become a plain.

The mountain of grief shall give way to divine comfort.

The mountain of fear shall give way to courage.

The mountain of hunger shall give way to provision.

The mountain of rejection shall give way to acceptance.

The mountain of loneliness shall give way to godly companionship.

The mountain of stagnation shall give way to progress.

The mountain of spiritual darkness shall give way to the saving light of Jesus Christ.

Like Joshua, we shall arise and cross over.

Like Zerubbabel, we shall see great mountains become plains.

What God has placed in our hands, we shall complete—not by might, nor by power, but by the Spirit of the living God.

HRG Olori Dame Ayo Yemisi Jaiyeola

Missioner, Serendipity House Widows Foundation
God’s Wives International Widows Ministry
Minister, Berakah Widows Fellowship
Widows Centre, Maryland, Lagos, Nigeria

Website: www.godswivesinternational.org

Mission Declaration
No Widow Must Sleep Hungry.
Arise, Be Strong and Courageous.
Every Mountain Shall Become a Plain.

MOVING MOUNTAINS BEFORE US: THE ZERUBBABEL EXPERIENCE
The Joshua Experience –
